Threadwild: Textures Cheat Sheet

Looking for your next creative spark? Unlock the secrets of Central Asian stitches, dyes, and fabrics, and learn how to weave cultural textures into your own projects. This guide is a shortcut to fresh ideas for makers, artists, and dreamers.

A Textile Tour So Good, It’ll Unravel Your Old Idea of Travel

Threadwild isn’t a trip. It’s a tactile transformation—a soul-deep creative experience that fuses nomadic craftsmanship, ancient stories, canyon looms, and modern expression.

Each Threadwild journey is stitched with story — from the rhythmic pulse of the loom to the soft weight of dyed wool between your fingers. You’ll trace the lineage of patterns that once told tales of migration, kinship, and devotion, discovering how ancient techniques breathe new life into modern creativity.

It’s made for artists, designers, makers, storytellers, and the creatively curious – it’s a creative travel experience.

If you’re a Gen Y or Gen Z creative who’s ever said, “I want a trip that fuels my creativity, connects me with something deeper, and gives me the tools to express it”

—Threadwild is your answer.

Return with handcrafted textiles, natural dye recipes, and an origin story for your next product line, gallery piece, or creative grant. You won’t just make memories—you’ll make marketable work and lifelong collaborators.

What Makes Threadwild the Most Unique Tour on Earth?

This isn’t a passive cultural walk-through—it’s an active, soul-rich immersion.

You won’t just watch Kazakh traditions — you’ll stitch, dye, weave, and invent alongside master artisans.

You’ll share stories over tea, restore yourself in hammams, and craft garments and patterns you can wear home with pride.

By the end, you’ll have more than souvenirs — you’ll hold a living connection to the steppe.

Because no one else does this. Period.
This is the only tour in Central Asia offering you the chance to:

Why this tour is different from all the others

You don’t need to be a pro. You just need to bring an open mind, a curious spirit, and a love for craft and creativity.

Sezim Zhunuskyzy & Keneshbubu Zhumaeva – Felt Master

With Kyrgyz roots and deep ties to the shared nomadic heritage of Central Asia, Keneshbubu Zhumaeva has been mastering the ancient art of felt-making since her early years.

Using vibrant colors and traditional ornaments, she creates carpets and wall hangings that reflect the harmony, warmth, and symbolism found across both Kazakh and Kyrgyz cultures.

Her daughter, Sezim Zhunus kyzy, grew up watching her mother’s hands bring wool to life — transforming it into intricate patterns that tell stories of home, family, and identity. While Sezim chose a different path, she now helps her mother preserve and promote their family’s craft, connecting it with admirers both locally and abroad.

During their master class, guests will have the chance to learn this ancient technique directly from Keneshbubu, creating their own miniature felt carpet — a handmade keepsake filled with the shared spirit and artistry of the steppe.

Examples of their work

Makpal Beisenbayeva – Craftswoman

Makpal is a craftswoman from Turkistan who carries on the traditions of her mother and grandmother. From an early age, she learned the art of working with felt and wool — skills deeply rooted in Kazakh culture.

Today, Makpal works as a technology teacher at a local school, where she passes this knowledge to her students, especially young girls, inspiring them to value and preserve national heritage.

Her craft reflects the beauty of everyday Kazakh life — calm, dedication, and a deep connection to tradition. Through her work, Makpal keeps the spirit of Turkistan’s artisans alive, blending family legacy with her own creative touch.

Examples of their work

Aliya Tleukhanova Textile Designer & Embroidery Artist

I’m a textile designer and artist working at the intersection of tradition and contemporary expression. My practice centers on embroidery, which I reinterpret through modern techniques and design sensibilities. Alongside my embroidered works, I also create prints for clothing and fabrics, as well as illustrations and graphic art that draw on the same sense of texture and storytelling.

A graduate of the Zhurgenov College and Academy of Arts (2020) with a degree in textile design, I have showcased my work in exhibitions and creative marathons across Kazakhstan. I also share my craft through lectures and hands-on embroidery masterclasses, encouraging others to explore the language of thread and pattern in new ways.

Indira Ikapova — President of the Turkistan Qoloner Association

As the President of Turkistan Qoloner, Indira Ikapova plays a key role in supporting and uniting local artisans across the region.

Deeply connected to the world of art and traditional crafts, she helps preserve ancient Kazakh techniques while creating new opportunities for modern masters. Through her leadership, the association promotes the cultural heritage of Turkistan, encouraging local artists to share their creativity with visitors from all over the world.
